Laser Hair Removal Q & A

How does laser hair removal work?

Using a handheld laser, Dr. Flood can selectively target the hair to remove and leave the surrounding skin undamaged. The laser is a concentrated beam of light that’s directed at the pigment in the hair follicles. The pigment absorbs the light as heat at the follicle root and kills the follicle. Your treatment will last between 20 minutes to an hour, depending on the size of the hair removal area.

Why does it take so long to see the results of laser hair removal?

It sounds like this is a quick procedure, but the nature of hair growth complicates things. Hair grows in 3 cycles: active, dormant, and shedding. Laser hair removal is only effective during the active stage of growth. This means you’ll need multiple evenly spaced out sessions to complete the process. After each hair removal session, your skin will release tiny, almost microscopic hairs over time. It might require 6-8 sessions to totally remove all unwanted hair.

Who is a good candidate for laser hair removal?

People with dark hair follicles are the easiest to treat because the dark pigment interacts well with the laser’s pulse. Gray, blonde, red, and white pigments are less reactive and require different settings or lasers. Dr. Flood will do a small patch test on the skin to see how your skin reacts to cosmetic laser treatments. Some skin doesn’t react well and these patients aren’t good candidates for the procedure.

What is the recuperation time and are there possible side effects?

When your session is done, you may resume your daily activities. The treated area may be red and swollen, but manageable. Other possible side effects in extreme situations include:

  • Blistering
  • Infections
  • Scarring
  • Skin lightening or darkening

This is why you see a professional dermatologist like Dr. Flood. He knows what precautions to take to ensure a safe and effective laser treatment.
