Acne Q & A

Isn’t acne just a part of growing up?

Acne is the most common skin condition in the United States. It appears mostly on the upper body, face, neck, chest and back. Acne is a skin condition involving clogged pores where bacteria thrive and inflammation results. According to the Mayo Clinic, about 75% of teenagers get acne. Acne doesn’t discriminate. Acne can affect people of all ages. But regardless of your age, a doctor should diagnose this skin condition to prevent worsening conditions and future scarring. Dr. Flood has many years of experience successfully treating people with mild to severe cases of acne.

Can I just stay away from fried foods, chocolate, and sodas to prevent acne?

Acne is primarily caused by your body’s oil production, dead skin cells, clogged pores and bacteria. Some of these conditions may be caused by skin hygiene, cosmetics, environmental oils, some foods, hormones and your family genetics. Your consultation with Dr. Flood will help him see the causes and provide the best treatment for your acne.

Why am I still getting acne as an adult?

It’s not uncommon for adults to get acne. In fact, some people who never had acne as a teenager can get acne as an adult. Adult acne can also be caused by hormones, which is frequently why women suffer from acne. Some women have reactions to oral contraception while others don’t. Hormonal changes like menopause, menstruation and pregnancy can also cause acne. Athletes may suffer outbreaks from drugs prescribed for injuries containing corticosteroids that may make acne worse. Make an appointment with Dr. Flood and let him determine the real cause of your adult acne and how to best treat it. Call or schedule an appointment online. The practice is currently welcoming new patients and accepts most major forms of insurance.
